Dallas - Saint Louis knocked off SMU 4-2 tonight in the Mustangs own Mi Cocina Classic at Westcott Field. Senior defender Danny Wynn tied the Billikens' single-game record with three assists.
"Danny Wynn had the type of game that you need from seniors playing on the road, and we were fortunate to get some finishing touches that allowed us some margin for error," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "We had a chance to get a lot of people in the game with the quick turnaround for tomorrow, so that was good, too. We felt good for Ryan Wileman to win his last match-up with his brother, so Ryan has bragging rights when he comes home."
The Billikens matched their single-game season high for goals with three in the opening half. Although SMU had the early shot advantage, SLU got on the board first at 10:39 as Texas native Ryan Wileman found the back of the net. After SMU keeper Steve Sandbo mishandled Wileman's flick off Wynn's throw-in, Wileman pounced on the loose ball and tapped it in at the right corner. The Bills made it a two-goal advantage in the 32nd minute on Alex Matteson's 8-yard side volley. Wynn made a strong 50-yard run down the right flank before sending a cross in front of the goal that found Matteson unattended.
SMU climbed back in the game in the 33rd minute off a corner kick. Mustangs defender Jay Needham skied high above everyone for a 10-yard header with Chase Ryan Wileman younger brother, picking up the assist. The Bills countered almost immediately in the 35th minute as freshman Larry Geraghty connected for his first career goal. After a SLU long ball was misplayed by the Mustangs' defense, Geraghty out-fought an SMU back, spun and lofted a 20-yard shot to the right corner. SMU thought it had closed the gap to a single goal again in the 29th minute on defender Jordan Mann's rebound goal, but the play was ruled offside.
SLU freshman forward Kyle Patterson further dimmed SMU's hopes with a tally in the 49th minute. Again off a Wynn throw-in found Patterson among SMU defenders, the British striker lofted a 10-yard shot inside the left post.
As Saint Louis fell into a less aggressive mode, SMU piled up a sizeable shots advantage and notched its second goal in the 68th minute. With a Billiken defender on his back 12 yards to the right of the goal, Mustangs forward Mike Uremovich spun and drilled a shot to the left corner. As the Mustangs continued to pressure furiously, Matteson came through with a defensive save in the 78th minute, turning away SMU defender Mynor Ganzalez's 20-yard blast. The Billikens regained some measure of control the rest of the way and kept the Mustangs at bay.
SMU (2-3-0) out-shot the Billikens 24-8 and had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. SLU keeper Jeff Sackman made seven saves to record the victory, while SMU's Sandbo made four stops. Wynn is now the eighth player to notch three assists in a game, joining teammate John DiRaimondo who last turned the trick against Cincinnati during the 2003 season.
Saint Louis (2-2-1) faces Tulsa Saturday at 5:30 p.m. In the first game, Tulsa and Loyola Marymount played to a 1-1 tie.
