Saint Louis head coach Brad Soderberg
Opening Remarks: "I'm thrilled we are 2-1 (in the A-10). It was just a grinder, I don't know how else to put it. My team needs to be commended for their defense. The difference between tonight's game and the George Washington game is that we defended consistently well for a long time. We did a good job on the defensive glass throughout the game, and we did reasonably well at the free throw line, so that is the difference."
"But the thing that still needs to be addressed, and I'm not going to back off my players on this, is we are not going to win consistently if we keep turning the ball over 20 times a game. We just got to get that fixed, and get it fixed immediately. You are walking on thin ice when you turn it over that much."
"The play at the end was something we put in yesterday in practice. That is why I didn't take timeout, we worked on it a lot in practice yesterday and worked on it at shootaround. I told the guys at the previous timeout, if we get the ball tied, I'm not calling a timeout because I don't want to give them a chance to set their defense or change their defense. We knew what we were going to do. I think the strategy of taking a timeout there would have been a poor one. Tommie didn't get a great shot, it was just a great player that made a great play. That is the trademark of a real player. He wanted the ball. I could tell from the previous huddle that he was wanting to get the shot. And that is a characteristic of a lot of great basketball players."
"Ian played a heck of a ballgame tonight. He did a really good job. Their bigs were in a lot of foul trouble because of him. When he sets both feet in the lane, you have a tough decision to make. You are either going to try to pull your way through, or you got to try to push. That is why they got into foul trouble."
UMass Head Coach Travis Ford
Opening Remarks: I need to give Brad Soderberg and Saint Louis a lot of credit, they did a terrific job against us tonight. They actually changed their style of play tonight, in that they started pressuring on the perimeter, which they don't do very much. Give their players a lot of credit. I told my staff today that this Saint Louis team will be at the top of this conference when it is said and done. I like their team and I like the way they are coached.
"They really took us out of everything we wanted to do. They did a good job of getting us in foul trouble. You can't go on the road and have 23 turnovers and expect to win the game, it's not going to happen. You can't shot 9-of-15 from the foul line on the road and expect to win, it's not going to happen."
On the play of Vouyoukas: "Vouyoukas is a heck of a basketball player. We've got some good big men, and he totally outplayed our big men tonight. That's not taking anything away from our guys, that is just giving him credit."
Saint Louis guard Tommie Liddell
"Coach put the ball in my hands and he wanted me to create a situation, and that is what I did. In the huddle he told us that if we got a rebound, he wasn't going to call a timeout. I think that was a good idea because they didn't have time to set up, so we just came down and got a shot."
On his last-second possession at GW: "I haven't watched the tape, but when I drove to the hole I felt my defender on me, plus I saw Pops in front of me, so I didn't really want to take the chance of him blocking my shot. I saw Danny (Brown) wide open in the corner so that is why I just passed it out."
Senior guard Anthony Drejaj
"I think our pressure really frustrated their offense. We know that has to be a blueprint for our team. When a team is scouting Saint Louis, we want them to think this is a defensive ballclub. We want to be able to stop anybody. We have proven we can score some points on the offensive end. If we hold up on the defensive end I think we'll be pretty good these next 14 games."
