Billikens Escape Richmond 64-55

Richmond, Va. - Kevin Lisch and Danny Brown led four Saint Louis players in double figures as the Billikens posted a 64-55 road victory at Richmond in Atlantic 10 Conference action on Sunday afternoon. The win was the second on the road in A-10 play this season for the Billikens.

The Billikens took the lead on their first shot of the game as Luke Meyer drained a jumper from the left side. After a Richmond trey, III sank back-to-back jumpers as the Billikens surged ahead 6-2 three minutes into the tilt. Barry Eberhardt went the distance with a steal, then converted a three-point play for an 11-8 SLU lead. The Spiders scored five in a row before two Meyer free throws tied the game at 13-13.

Kevin Lisch scored on an inbounds play then hit a bucket in transition. A Liddell jumper from the left wing capped an 8-0 run as the Billikens pushed ahead 19-13. Two layups by Danny Brown handed the Billikens a 23-14 lead as the SLU defense kept UR without a field goal for over seven minutes. Richmond closed to 25-21 in the waning seconds of the half, and Lisch hit a deep 3-pointer from the left corner to hand the Billikens a 28-21 lead at intermission. The Billiken defense held the Spiders to 25.9 percent shooting (7-of-27).

The Spiders scored the first five points of the half and tied the game at 30-30 three minutes in. Bryce Husak had an offensive putback, and two Meyer free throws put the Billikens back up 34-30. Richmond tied the game again at 35-35, before SLU scored five points on one trip. Liddell hit a basket and was fouled. Although he missed the subsequent free throw, Brown tracked the ball down and drained a 3-pointer to put the Billikens up 41-35 with under 12 minutes left in the game. A Meyer layup pushed the SLU advantage to eight points. The Spiders answered with a quick 5-0 burst by David Gonzalvez to cut the gap to 46-42 with 6:46 remaining in the game. Two good free throws by Paul Eckerle handed the Billikens a 48-42 margin, but Dan Geriot hit a trey and two free throws as Richmond closed to 48-47 with 4:59 left. The Spiders finally took the lead at 49-48, but two Lisch free throws put SLU back on top. After a UR miss, Lisch threaded a pass through traffic for an Eberhardt layup. The Spiders missed again, and Liddell rattled in a jumper from the right to build the lead to 54-49 with 2:11 remaining. After a UR score, Brown tallied inside to keep the lead at five. Lisch and Eberhardt both made two free throws as they pushed the lead to 60-51. The Spiders scored, then stole the basket for another bucket to close to 60-55 with 12.7 seconds remaining. Brown hit two more free throws, and Liddell closed out the scoring with two more free throws.

In addition to Lisch, and Brown, Liddell added 12 points, and Eberhardt added 10. Husak grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, while Lisch tied his career best with eight boards. The Billikens tied their season best with 13 offensive rebounds leading to 17 second chance points. Dan Geriot led Richmond with 21 points, 18 coming in the second half.

The Billikens improve to 13-10, 4-5 in the A-10. The Spiders are now 12-10 overall, 5-4 in the league.
