ST. LOUIS - The Saint Louis Billikens drained 14 3-pointers, one short of the school record, and powered past George Washington 63-38 in Atlantic 10 Conference play on Wednesday. The Billikens hit seven treys in each half and posted their largest margin of victory in A-10 play since joining the league three years ago.
Bryce Husak carried the Billikens early as he scored the first seven points of the game for SLU. The game was tied at 10-10 with just over nine minutes left in the half before the Billikens rattled off a 17-0 run fueled by the deep ball. Danny Brown began the run with two straight 3-pointers. Dwayne Polk sank a trey, followed by a mid-range jumper by III. Polk found the range again from deep to push the margin to 24-10. Kevin Lisch joined in from beyond the arc to build the SLU margin to 17 with 2:49 remaining before intermission. Rob Diggs finally ended the drought for GWU. Paul Eckerle drained a 3-pointer from the corner as the Billikens settled for a 30-14 advantage at the break.
The Colonials got as close as 13 points in the second half and were down 35-21 four minutes in before the Billikens took control in the second half. Husak swished in consecutive 3-pointers, and a Brown layup built the lead to 43-21 six minutes info the second period. GWU trimmed the lead to under 20 points at 49-30 midway through the second half, but the Billikens heated up from deep again. Lisch and Liddell sandwiched treys around a hoop from Luke Meyer for a 57-30 lead. Two free throws by Liddell gave the Billikens their largest lead of the evening at 59-30 with just over six minutes left to play and the Billikens cruised the rest of the way.
Husak hit 6-of-8 shots from the field, including both 3-point attempts, en route to a game-high 15 points. Polk hit 4-of-5 from deep and finished with 12 points. Lisch finished with 11 points, six assists and five rebounds and did not commit a turnover in 33 minutes of play. The Billikens were 14-of-27 from deep, one short of the record of 15 set against Kansas State on Jan 3, 2004, and matched against Temple on Jan. 17, 2007. The 38 points allowed were the fewest surrendered since giving up just 35 to Grambling State on Dec. 17, 2003.
The Billikens won their second straight and move to 14-10, 5-5 in the A-10. The Colonials fall to 6-14 overall, 2-8 in the A-10. The Billikens return to the road for a 1 p.m. (CT) game at Massachusetts on Sunday, Feb. 17.
