Minutemen Hold Off Billikens 88-77

Amherst, Mass. - Despite a 25-point effort from junior guard Kevin Lisch, a late Saint Louis rally came up short 88-77 at Massachusetts in Atlantic 10 action on Sunday afternoon in Amherst, Mass. The loss ended the Billikens' two-game winning streak.

The Minutemen started the game red-hot from the field hitting 5-of-6 from the field, including all three 3-pointers, in running out to a 13-5 lead. A Kevin Lisch and a deep trey from Eckerle.

After a Luke Meyer free throw, Eberhardt scored off a feed from Lisch to cut the margin to 29-23. III drained a jumper from the right elbow, and two Lisch charity tosses brought SLU to 32-27 with five minutes left in the half. The UMass lead stood at 10, but the Billiken defense kept the Minutemen scoreless for over three minutes. Eckerle made two free throws to begin a 7-0 SLU run. After an Adam Knollmeyer layup, Danny Brown swished a 3-pointer from the left corner to bring the Billikens to 37-34. The Minutemen pushed out to a seven-point lead before a Lisch layup just before the buzzer brought the Billikens to 41-36 at intermission. The Billikens outshot UMass from the field 50 percent to 42.9 percent, but the Minutemen drained seven 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes.

The Minutemen began the second half with a burst with 6-0 before Brown sank a trey from the left side. The senior guard scored on a drive to the basket to bring the Billikens' deficit to under double-digits. The Billikens went on a 7-2 run as Meyer and Eckerle hit 3-pointers to cut the gap to 54-48. However, UMass tallied five straight to rebuild a double-digit lead. The Billikens used the deep ball and hit four straight treys to close to 65-57 on a Lisch trey. After a UMass miss, Lisch scored on a drive to trim the margin to 65-59 with 7:06 remaining in the game. Dante Milligan scored two straight baskets for UMass. Four points by Liddell and a trey by Lisch rallied the Billikens again as they trimmed the margin to 72-66 with 3:15 to go in the game. Brown scored seven straight points as the Billikens put on a late charge and cut the gap to 81-75 with one minute to play. However, UMass hit four free throws and scored a basket to hold off the Billiken comeback.

Lisch hit 7-of-12 shots from the field to tie for the most points scored this season by a Billiken, matching his output against Xavier. Brown sank four 3-pointers to set his season best with 19 points, while Eckerle tied his career high with 13 points.

The Billikens fall to 14-11, 5-6 in the A-10. The Minutemen are now 16-9 overall, 5-6 in the A-10.
