Charlotte Pulls Away Late Versus Billikens 81-64

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers used a late 11-0 run to move by the Saint Louis Billikens 81-64 on Saturday evening at Halton Arena in Charlotte, N.C. The Billikens cut a double-digit lead to just two, but the 49ers pulled away late in the second half.

Kevin Lisch scored the first basket of the game for the Billikens, and after a Charlotte hoop, III hit four free throws. A Liddell bucket edged the Billikens on top 8-7 four minutes into the game. Charlotte jumped into the lead before Lisch and Liddell sandwiched treys around a short jumper from Luke Meyer in the lane to draw to 17-16 at the 12:51 mark. Liddell drained his second trey of the half to tie the score at 24-24, but the 49ers tacked on a 3-pointer and a long jumper from the corner to take a 29-24 lead.

The Billikens responded with a 7-0 burst as Dwayne Polk sank his second trey of the half, and two Liddell free throws tied the game. Marcus Relphorde scored on a breakaway to put the Billikens on top 31-29 at the 7:10 mark. The 49ers used a 7-0 run to retake the lead, before a tip by Barry Eberhardt ended the Charlotte run. Husak scored with just under three minutes left in the half, but the 49ers scored the last eight points of the half to take a 44-35 lead at intermission.

The 49ers scored to open the second half, but the Billikens scored six straight to cut the gap to 46-41 to force a Charlotte timeout. The 49ers then scored the next five points to rebuild a double-digit lead at 51-41. The 49ers still held a 54-45 lead before the Billikens charged back into the game on the heels of an 8-3 run. Danny Brown hit a trey to begin the run. After one Meyer free throw, the Billikens snared the offensive rebound, and Husak scored inside. When Liddell scored on a lob from Polk, the lead was down to 57-53. Two free throws by Meyer brought the Billikens to within two at 57-55 with just over 10 minutes left to play. However, the 49ers took charge late with an 11-0 run. The 49ers made three free throws then rattled in a 3-pointer to up their advantage to 63-55. Two more charity tosses and another trey handed Charlotte its biggest lead of the evening. A Brown 3-pointer finally ended the SLU drought to bring the Billikens to within 10, but the 49ers went on a quick 5-0 run and held the Billikens off the rest of the way.

Liddell led the Billikens with 18 points and six rebounds, while Eberhardt hit 5-of-7 shots en route to 10 points. Lamont Mack led five 49ers in double figures with 15 points. The Billikens and 49ers scored the same number of field goals, and Charlotte hit nine 3-pointer to seven for the Billikens. However, the 49ers went to the line 32 times and hit 26, the most by a SLU opponent this season.

The Billikens fall to 15-12 overall, 6-7 in the Atlantic 10. The 49ers snap a three-game skid and stand at 15-11, 6-6 in the A-10.
