Dan Donigan Resigns Men's Soccer Post

Jan. 22, 2010

ST. LOUIS - Dan Donigan today announced his resignation as head men's soccer coach at Saint Louis University. He has accepted the same position at Rutgers University in his native New Jersey.

Donigan was named head coach at SLU in 2001 after serving four seasons as an assistant. During his nine-year head coaching tenure, the Billikens posted a 118-42-23 record and made seven NCAA Tournament appearances. Last season, SLU captured the Atlantic 10 Conference title and advanced to its fourth straight NCAA Tournament.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Saint Louis University," Donigan said. "I am forever indebted to Father Biondi, Chris May, past administrators and all the support staff throughout my time here for affording me the opportunity to coach a nationally prominent program. It is a bittersweet move for me personally, but I feel this is what is best for my family. I am going to miss the program and the players, but I feel confident that this program will continue to succeed for many years. I wish the Billikens nothing but the best in the future."

"We thank Dan for his service at Saint Louis University," SLU director of athletics Chris May said. "He has left the program in a position to continue to succeed on the national level. Rutgers is getting a fine coach, and we wish him and his family well in this new chapter in their lives.

"A national search for a new soccer coach at SLU has already begun," May said. "We owe it to our student-athletes to perform an exhaustive coaching search to identify the best person for the job. We know that there is great interest in the position, and we look forward to hiring a coach who will continue the national prominence of the program. We have begun reaching out to the Billiken soccer community as we identify candidates."

Donigan came to SLU in 1997 and served as an assistant for four seasons under former coach Bob Warming. Donigan earned the SLU head coaching job in 2001 and took the Billikens to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament in 2001 and 2003. During his tenure, Donigan coached seven NSCAA All-Americans and four CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.
