PITTSBURGH - Saint Louis dropped a 67-45 decision at Duquesne Wednesday in Atlantic 10 Conference men's basketball action at A.J. Palumbo Center.
The loss drops Saint Louis to 5-11 on the season and 0-3 in the A-10. The Billikens will look end a six-game skid on Saturday when they host Saint Joseph's at Chaifetz Arena. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. The game will be televised on KPLR 11 with Rich Gould and Scott Highmark on the call.
SLU led for a better part of the opening half before suffering a scoring drought at the end of the first half and the start of the second. In all, Duquesne manufactured a 24-1 rally during that timeframe to take control of the contest and cruise to the 22 point victory.
The Billikens ended up shooting 37 percent from the floor, 31.6 percent from 3-point range. SLU was hampered by 20 turnovers that resulted in 20 Duquesne points as well as a 41.7 percent shooting mark from the charity stripe. Cody Ellis led the Billikens with 10 points, while Kyle Cassity chipped in eight.
SLU held Duquesne, the league's top rated offense, well below their scoring average. The Dukes shot 45.1 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from 3-point range and 62.5 percent from the line. T.J. McConnell led all scorers with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor.
Ellis scored five of the Billikens' first seven points as SLU led 7-4 early. Back-and-forth action ensued before a traditional 3-point play by Mike McCall gave the Billikens a 16-13 advantage with 8:13 left in the first frame.
Ellis nailed a trey to make it 19-14 with 6:40 left, the five-point lead being the biggest advantage for either team in closely contested first half.
Duquesne chipped away at its deficit and tied it up a little more than a minute later, but SLU regained control on 3-pointers by Ellis and Kyle Cassity as SLU led 25-21 with 2:46 left in the opening stanza.
However, the Dukes would close the half on an 8-0 run to take a 29-25 lead into halftime, and continued that rally into the second half, not allowing a Billiken field goal until there was 8:52 left in the game.
