ST. LOUIS - Dwayne Evans pumped in 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Saint Louis posted a 61-56 victory against Charlotte in a key Atlantic 10 Conference men's basketball matchup Saturday at Chaifetz Arena.
The win moves the Billikens to 9-17 overall and 4-9 in the A-10, while Charlotte dips to 10-16 and 2-10 in the leauge.
Evans hit 8-of-13 from the floor en route to his 16 points. Five of his 12 rebounds came on the offensive glass. It was his team-leading fourth double-double of the season.
Mike McCall added 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting, while Rob Loe chipped in 12 on 4-of-7 shooting from 3-point land. Brian Conklin posted eight points and eight rebounds, while Kyle Cassity picked up seven assists.
The Bills shot 41.9 percent from the field but just 30.8 percent from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, Charlotte hung in the game by shooting 41.7 percent from 3-point range and 90 percent form the line.
In a game that featured 13 ties and 10 lead changes, neither team led by more than four points until the Billikens went on a 7-0 run to take a 51-44 lead with 6:45 remaining. McCall began the run with a 3-pointer and Evans closed it with a pair of jumpers.
Charlotte rallied and went on a 7-0 run of its own to get within 57-56. After Cassity's layup extended Saint Louis' lead to 59-56 with 46 seconds remaining, the 49ers came up with three offensive rebounds on their next possession but missed on all four shot attempts. McCall drained a pair of free throws down the stretch to hand the Billikens the five-point victory.
Javarris Barnett led Charlotte with 17 points, while Derrio Green added 13.
The Billikens step outside of A-10 play Tuesday, Feb. 22, when they host Chicago State at Chaifetz Arena. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. SLU's next A-10 game is Saturday, Feb. 26, when Duquesne visits Chaifetz Arena for a 7 p.m. game.
