ST. LOUIS – Freshman Erin Nelson scored 25 points in her Saint Louis debut, but Missouri held off the Billikens' second-half rally and claimed a 74-59 victory Friday night at Chaifetz Arena in the season opener for both teams.
Nelson's 10-of-18 shooting effort included a 4-of-7 performance from 3-point range. She also grabbed five rebounds.
Denisha Womack tallied 10 points and eight rebounds, while Sadie Stipanovich and Olivia Jakubicek grabbed nine boards apiece. Jamesia Price registered nine points, five rebounds and three assists, and Desirae Ball added seven points and four assists.
Missouri got 19 points and 10 rebounds from Kayla McDowell; 12 points from Morgan Eye; nine points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocks from Jordan Frericks; and seven assists and six rebounds from Lianna Doty.
Missouri used a 9-2 run at the beginning of the second half to turn a 35-33 halftime lead into a 44-35 advantage with 17:15 to play. The Tigers later assembled a 10-0 spurt to post their largest lead, 54-39, at the 11:43 mark.
Nelson then took matters into her own hands, scoring 15 points – including three 3-pointers – in a 20-6 flurry that sliced the Missouri lead to 60-59 with 5:01 remaining.
However, Eye answered Nelson's last triple of the run with one of her own on Missouri's next possession, and the Tigers gradually pulled away down the stretch.
Missouri jumped out to a 10-2 advantage before an 11-4 spurt, including a pair of Price 3-pointers, narrowed the lead to 14-13.
The Tigers led 26-16 with 6:02 left in the opening frame, only to see the Billikens embark on a 17-6 run to take their only lead of the contest, 33-32, with 1:22 left. Nelson triggered the run with her first 3-pointer, and five other Billikens scored at least two points during the spurt. A trey by Eye put Missouri back in front at the break.
Saint Louis returns to action at Chaifetz Arena Sunday, Nov. 10, hosting Valparaiso at 1 p.m.
