THE BASICS
Saint Louis began the third quarter with a 20-5 run to take firm command, and the Billikens went on to defeat Southeast Missouri State 67-52 Saturday afternoon at Chaifetz Arena in the season opener for both teams.
HOW IT HAPPENED
--SLU led 11-9 after a first quarter that saw the teams combine to shoot just 20 percent (8-of-40) overall and 6.7 percent (1-of-15) from 3-point range.
--A 10-4 spurt gave SEMO a 19-15 advantage midway through the second quarter. However, Saint Louis responded with a 14-4 run to take a 29-23 lead into intermission.
--A three-point play by Jamesia Price less than two minutes into the third quarter gave the Billikens their first double-digit lead, 33-23.
--SEMO scored on its next possession, but SLU rattled off the next 12 points. Price's fast-break layup with 5:51 left made it 45-25, and the Billikens' lead grew to 22 before a 10-3 flurry allowed SEMO to narrow the gap to 52-37 heading into the final stanza.
--The Redhawks trailed by 11, 60-49, when Connor King hit a trey at the 4:49 mark, but they would draw no closer.
BILLIKEN NOTABLES
--Jackie Kemph had team highs of 15 points and five assists (also a game high). Kemph tied her career high of six free throws made while attempting a career-high eight charity tosses.
--Jamesia Price was 5-of-9 from the field and scored 14 points. Price added four assists.
--Sadie Stipanovich posted a double-double of 11 points and a game-high-tying 11 rebounds.
--Maddison Gits connected on 5-of-8 from the floor and tallied a career-high 11 points. Gits also grabbed five rebounds.
--Denisha Womack and Olivia Jakubicek collected nine and six rebounds, respectively, as the Bills nudged the Redhawks 45-43 on the boards. Four of Jakubicek's rebounds came on the offensive end.
--The Billikens shot 52 percent (13-of-25) from the field in the second half.
--The victory snapped the Billikens' five-game losing streak in season openers.
