THE BASICS
--Jackie Kemph tallied 17 points and six assists en route to earning All-Tournament honors, but a 14-2 third-quarter run propelled Tulane to a 66-58 victory over Saint Louis Monday night in the championship game of the Tulane Classic Presented by Embassy Suites.
--Saint Louis slipped to 9-2, while Tulane of the American Athletic Conference improved to 9-3.
--Denisha Womack also was selected to the All-Tournament team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
--Saint Louis built a 13-6 advantage with the help of three 3-pointers, but an 8-2 Tulane run cut the lead to 15-14 after one quarter.
--After Maddison Gits hit a bucket and a 3-pointer to stretch the margin to six, Tulane scored seven straight points to go in front 21-20.
--Denisha Womack's basket put SLU back on top. Jenny Vliet's trey and Gits' layup gave the Billikens a 27-23 halftime lead.
--Tulane scored on its first seven possessions of the third quarter to grab a 37-29 edge. Womack answered with three consecutive field goals to trim the deficit to 39-35, and Gits sank two free throws to make it a 40-37 game. However, the Green Wave registered the last four points of the period to lead 44-37 after three.
--Tulane took its largest lead, 50-39, with 7:30 remaining. A 61-51 Green Wave advantage was sliced in half when the Billikens recorded a five-point possession – Vliet's triple and two Jackie Kemph free throws following a Tulane technical foul – with 47 seconds left.
--Aaliyah Covington's layup with 21 seconds to play made it 62-58, but Tulane converted four free throws in the waning moments to secure the win.
BILLIKEN NOTABLES
--Jackie Kemph's 17-point total included a 6-of-6 effort from the free throw line. Kemph has 65 free throw attempts in 11 games after shooting 70 times from the stripe all of last season.
--Maddison Gits was 5-of-9 from the field and tossed in 13 points.
--Denisha Womack scored 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
--Jenny Vliet contributed nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.
--Jamesia Price had two steals, giving her 152 for her career and moving her into fifth place on Saint Louis' all-time list.
--The Billikens were 10-of-10 from the free throw line.
