PITTSBURGH – Marcus Bartley scored a career-high 16 points, but Saint Louis fell to Duquesne 79-66 Wednesday in Atlantic 10 Conference men's basketball action at the Palumbo Center.
The Billikens dip to 11-17 overall and 3-12 in the A-10 with three regular-season games remaining. Duquesne improves to 10-16 and 5-10 in the league.
Milik Yarbrough led the Billikens with 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Bartley shot 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-7 from 3-point range to account for his 16 points, which betters his previous high of 13 points (accomplished twice).
Reggie Agbeko scored seven points and pulled down a game- and career-high seven rebounds. Austin Gillmann tied his career best with four assists.
Bartley's first of three first-half treys put the Billikens ahead 6-5 early on before Duquesne erupted for a 14-0 run to lead 19-8.
The Billikens used a hot stretch of shooting in the first half to claw their way back. SLU went 6-6 from the field within a 12-2 run as SLU moved to within one of the lead.
Later, back-to-back buckets inside by Yarbrough gave SLU its first advantage of the game at 32-30. But Duquesne would close the first half on a 7-0 run - including a triple by L.G. Gill at the horn - to give the Dukes a 40-33 halftime lead.
In the second half of play, Duquesne stretched out to a 58-42 advantage midway through the period. Agbeko would score seven Billiken points in an 11-3 SLU rally as the Billikens pulled to within eight at 61-53 with 5:58 to go.
But Duquesne would hit six-straight free throws to build its lead back to double digits and the Dukes never looked back in posting the 13-point victory.
The Billikens are back in action Saturday night when they host George Mason at Chaifetz Arena. Tip time is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will be televised on Fox Sports Midwest.
