THE BASICS
Despite a game-high 17 points from sophomore guard Miles Reynolds, Saint Louis dropped a 72-56 decision to VCU Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference men's basketball action at Chaifetz Arena.
SLU falls to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in the A-10. VCU has won six in a row and improves to 11-5 overall, 3-0 in the league.
The Billikens trailed by four at halftime despite shooting just 2-of-13 from the field in the first half. However, VCU drilled seven of its 10 threes in the second half and outscored the Billikens 43-31 in the second session to post the double-digit victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-- VCU led wire-to-wire.
-- The Rams got off to a 13-0 lead. SLU's first points came at the 12:50 mark of the first half – a pair of free throws by Milik Yarbrough.
-- The Billikens' first of two field goals in the first half came at 6:32, a Mike Crawford layin.
-- Later in the half, a Yarbrough 3-pointer sparked the Billikens as they closed the first half on a 7-0 run and trailed 29-25 at the break.
-- Saint Louis pulled to within one early in the second half after baskets by Austin Gillmann and Reynolds, but that is as close to the lead the Billikens would get.
-- VCU used a 17-0 run midway through the second half to take control. The Rams led by as much as 24 and they cruised to the 16-point win.
BILLIKEN NOTABLES
-- SLU stayed in the game early on thanks to effective free-throw shooting. The Billikens were 26-of-31 from the stripe for the game, a percentage of .839.
-- Reynolds was 11-of-13 from the line en route to 17 points. He also dished out a team-high four assists.
-- Crawford finished in double figures for the second straight game, scoring 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting from the field and 4-of-5 from the line.
VCU LEADERS
-- Mo Alie-Cox led four Rams in double figures with 16 points. He was 10-of-13 from the line.
-- VCU posted 17 assists on 22 baskets.
