THE BASICS
Saint Louis was unable to dig itself out of an early hole and fell 81-71 to Duquesne Wednesday night in Atlantic 10 Conference men's basketball action at the Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Freshman guard Jermaine Bishop scored a career-high 21 points for the Billikens. SLU scored 58 points in the second half after scoring just 13 in the first.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-- The Billikens never led.
-- The Dukes opened up a 17-2 lead in the first six minutes of the game.
-- The Billikens struggled offensively in the opening half, making just 4-of-36 shots from the field en route to 13 points. SLU also had 11 turnovers as it trailed 38-13 at the break
-- In the second half – playing mainly with the lineup of Aaron Hines, Jermaine Bishop, Ash Yacoubou, Mike Crawford and Matt Neufeld – the Billikens outscored Duquesne 58-43 and shot a sizzling 58.1 percent (18-of-31).
-- SLU suffered its largest deficit of the game at the 8:24 mark of the second half when it was down by 33 points at 71-38.
-- The Billikens did not quit, however, as they ended the game on a 33-10 run but still lost by 10.
BILLIKEN NOTABLES
-- Jermaine Bishop played all 20 minutes of the second half and scored 19 of his career-high 21 points in the second session. For the game, he was 5-of-10 from the field and 9-of-10 from the stripe. In addition, he collected a career-best four assists.
-- Ash Yacoubou scored 21 points to match Bishop for team-high honors. Yacoubou had five 3-pointers, all in the second half, to help the Billikens claw back late.
-- Mike Crawford hit three of his four 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 16 points.
-- Matt Neufeld was 3-of-3 from the field and finished with six points. Aaron Hines, who played a career-high 23 minutes including 19 in the second half, recorded his first-career points after burying a pair of second-half free throws.
-- In addition to their hot shooting in the second half, the Billikens protected the basketball, only turning it over three times.
DUQUESNE LEADERS
-- Four Dukes finished in double figures, led by leading scorers Derrick Colter (17 points) and Micah Mason (15 points). Darius Lewis was 5-of-5 from the field and recorded seven blocks.
