THE BASICS
Rhode Island buried 12 3-pointers and had five players score in double figures as the Rams defeated Saint Louis 85-57 Saturday at the Ryan Center.
It was the Atlantic 10 Conference opener for both teams. The Billikens fall to 5-8 and 0-1 in the A-10, while Rhode Island improves to 9-5 overall and 1-0 in the league.
Miles Reynolds and Ash Yacoubou led the Billikens with 12 points apiece. SLU yielded a season-high 85 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-- Rhode Island hit four consecutive 3-pointers at the outset and led 14-2 at the first media timeout.
-- URI built its lead to 18-2 before an 8-0 run pulled the Billikens within eight of the lead with 11:03 left in the half.
-- Later in the half, SLU pulled to within eight once again on a pair of free throws by Austin Gillmann, but URI reeled off five points in a row and grabbed a double-digit lead it would not relinquish.
-- The Rams led by 18 points at halftime and had a comfortable margin the rest of the way.
BILLIKEN NOTABLES
-- Reynolds was 2-of-3 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free-throw line for his 12 points.
-- Yacoubou drained 5-of-11 of his shots en route to 12 points and finished with a team-high-tying six rebounds.
-- Milik Yarbrough was 4-of-7 from the field and finished with nine points, while Davell Roby hit 3-of-8 and finished with eight points.
RHODE ISLAND LEADERS
-- Four McGlynn led the Rams for the second-straight game with 16 points. He had a team-high four of URI's 12 threes.
-- Earl Watson was 6-of-6 from the field en route to 14 points.
UP NEXT
The Billikens open up a two-game homestand on Wednesday when they welcome George Washington to Chaifetz Arena. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will be televised on FOX Sports Midwest.
