Bills Win Fifth Straight, Taylor Gets 1000th Kill

THE BASICS

• Saint Louis won their fifth straight match Friday night, improving to 11-8 on the season, 5-1 in conference play.

• The Rhode Island Rams drop to 6-12, 1-5 in the A-10.

• With 20 in the match Friday, junior Maya Taylor has collected exactly 1,000 kills in her career, becoming just the 15th Billiken to reach the feat.

• Junior Juliana Phillips recorded a career-high 21 kills, while adding four blocks, three digs and one service ace. She hit for a .327 attack percentage in the match.

FIRST SET

In a set that saw 11 tie scores, Saint Louis was able to come out on top 25-23. Rhode Island's biggest lead at 15-12 was erased by the Billikens, who were able to knot things at 17.

SECOND SET

Rhode Island jumped out to an early 10-6 lead, but the Billikens went on a 5-0 run and got out on top 11-10. It was a back-and-forth battle from there, with the Rams eventually holding a 22-19 lead. Saint Louis then scored six of the last seven points and won the frame 25-23.

THIRD SET

In a back-and-forth set that included 18 tie scores and five lead changes, Rhode Island came back from being down 22-19 to win the frame 26-24. The Rams' victory in game three ended the Billikens set win streak at 12.

FOURTH SET

The Billikens erased an early 3-0 Rams lead, answering back with four straight points. Rhode Island took control of the set from there, holding leads at 10-6, 17-14 and 22-18. The Rams won game four 25-22, forcing a fifth set.

FIFTH SET

Rhode Island had a quick 4-1 lead in set five, but the Billikens tied things at six and then, using an Emily Imo service ace, took the lead. Following tie scores at 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12, the Bills pulled ahead 14-12 and then won on a kill by Sara Daniels.

NOTABLE

• Phillips recorded a career-high 21 kills, while also adding four blocks, three digs and one service ace. She hit for a .327 attack percentage in the match.

Kennedy Cordia tallied 51 assists and 21 digs for the Billikens.

• Sophomore Cayce Chaykowsky collected a season-high 23 digs, while also adding three assists. 

• Taylor had 20 kills, one service ace, one dig and two blocks.

Sien Gallop recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs.

UP NEXT

The Billikens wrap up a four-match road stretch with a 1 p.m. first serve in Bronx, N.Y., against Fordham on Saturday.
