PHILADELPHIA – Saint Louis rallied from a two-set deficit, but La Salle pulled out the win in the decisive fifth set to defeat the Billikens 3-2 (14-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-14, 12-15) on Sunday in Atlantic 10 Conference volleyball action at Tom Gola Arena.
The Billikens fall to 15-10 overall and 9-3 in league play, while La Salle improves to 13-12 overall and 7-6 in the A-10.
Maya Taylor led the Billikens with 15 kills, while
Sien Gallop added 12 kills and 10 digs.
Cayce Chaykowsky registered 16 digs, while
Kennedy Cordia posted 35 assists. Gallop and Cordia each had a team-high three service aces
La Salle came out hot in the first set, winning the first five points while cruising to the 25-14 win. The Billikens responded in set two, and they used a 4-0 rally to pull with one at 22-21, but La Salle ended up taking that set as well with a 25-23 win.
The Billikens fought back to win sets three and four to force the fifth set. In the third, the Billikens took control with a 7-1 scoring run. In the fourth, SLU started out on a 6-0 run and never looked back.
In the fifth set, SLU had an 11-10 advantage, but La Salle would go on to win five of the final six points to secure the A-10 victory.
The Billikens close out their regular season next weekend, hosting VCU (Friday, Nov. 15, 7 p.m.) and Davidson (Sunday, Nov. 17, Noon) at Chaifetz Pavilion.
