Smith Traore’s Career Day Sends Billikens Past Cincinnati, 60-50

Rebounding and defense helps SLU post impressive road win

CINCINNATI – Saint Louis sophomore forward Myriama Smith Traore registered a game- and career-high 18 rebounds and added a career-best seven points as the Billikens ousted Cincinnati 60-50 on Sunday at Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Billikens move to 2-0 with the victory, and hand Cincinnati (1-1) its first loss of the season. The Bearcats won 24 games a season ago and has all five starters back from a team that reached the WNIT quarterfinals.

Three Billikens scored in double figures, led by Myia Clark's 15 points. Ciaja Harbison added 14 points, while Rachel Kent turned in 10.

Kendra Wilken scored nine points and added nine rebounds, while Brooke Flowers pulled down nine boards.

Saint Louis out-rebounded the Bearcats 48-35 on the day while also playing a stifling defense. SLU limited Cincinnati to just 29 percent shooting (20-of-69) from the floor, and the Bearcats were 0-of-13 from 3-point range.

The Billikens led by as many as six points in the first quarter before the Bearcats clawed their way back to tie it a 13-all after one quarter of play. Saint Louis would out-score Cincinnati 21-14 in the second quarter to take a 34-27 lead into halftime.

Cincinnati came out of halftime on fire, going on an 8-0 run to grab a 35-34 lead in the third. SLU's Chloe Rice snapped the Billikens' skid by nailing a 3-pointer.

In the fourth quarter, Cincinnati again went on top with 7:48 left, but another trey by the Billikens, this time by Kent, put the Billikens ahead for good.

Kent hit another triple with two minutes left to put SLU up by six, and the Billikens hit their free throws down the stretch (8-of-8 in the final minute) to seal the win.

Saint Louis stays on the road to face Northern Kentucky on Tuesday. Game time in Highland Heights, Kentucky, is set for 6 p.m.
