Billikens Take Season-Opening Series from UT Martin

THE BASICS

• Saint Louis (2-1) smacked 16 hits and scored 10 runs to win its season-opening weekend series 2-1 over UT Martin (1-2).
• Kyle Fitzgerald collected his second-straight 3-hit game, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
• Matt Boyer earned the win in his Billikens debut, striking out five in five innings of work.


HOW IT HAPPENED

• A pair of 2-out RBI base knocks in the first inning by UT Martin put the Skyhawks on the board early, giving them a 2-0 lead.
• Following a leadoff solo shot from Fitzgerald in the Billikens' half of the second inning, Saint Louis added three more with two outs courtesy of a Colten Schild RBI triple and Cole Smith and Corrigan Bartlett's RBI singles.
• The Billikens tacked on another three runs in their half of the fourth, including RBI singles from Smith and Bartlett.
• Matt Happ gave SLU a six-run lead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
• The Skyhawks pushed across their third run in the sixth inning using a sacrifice fly.
• Saint Louis answered back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back RBI singles from Fitzgerald and George Sutherland.


BILLIKEN NOTABLES

• Fitzgerald finished the weekend with eight hits in 13 at bats (.615), including one home run, five RBIs and three runs scored.
• Boyer's final line: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 SO.
• Smith (2 RBIs, 1 R), Bartlett (2 RBIs, 1 R), Sutherland (1 RBI), Spencer Bloom (2 R) and Schild (2 R, 1 RBI) each tallied two hits in the contest.
• Ryan Nolan tossed a scoreless seventh inning, punching out one.
• Marius Balandis struck out the side in the ninth, allowing just one hit.

• The Billikens travel to Lexington, S.C. next weekend for a 3-game series with Ohio University beginning Friday at 2 p.m. CT.
