THE BASICS
Mississippi Valley State did all its damage in the second and third innings in an 8-4 victory over Saint Louis in the opening game of Southern Mississippi's Black & Gold Invitational Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Billikens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Gabbie Kowalik's sacrifice fly plated the first run, and
Alyssa Chavez's double chased home the second.
• Mississippi Valley answered with five runs in the top of the second.
• SLU closed the gap with a run in its half of the second on
Kristi Stevenson's sacrifice fly.
• MVSU stretched the lead to 8-3 with a three-run third inning.
• The Bills tallied their final run in the seventh on a
Kat Lane RBI single.

BILLIKEN NOTABLES
• Kaylea Chappelle recorded two doubles.
• Chavez and
Lane had a double and a single apiece.
• Aubrey Hacke pitched four innings of three-hit shutout relief, striking out three and walking only one.
