UAB Rallies to Top Billikens, 77-72

ST. LOUIS – UAB utilized a 10-0 second-half run to upend Saint Louis 77-72 Saturday night in nonconference men's basketball action at Chaifetz Arena.

The loss snapped the Billikens' four-game winning streak as they dip to 7-2 on the year. UAB improves to 7-2.

DeAndre Jones led the Billikens in scoring with a season-high 17 points, which came on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor and 5-of-7 from the arc.

Fred Thatch Jr. (4-6 FG) and Francis Okoro (3-5 FG) chipped in 12 points apiece. Marten Linssen went for 11 points and established a career high with four blocked shots.

Yuri Collins recorded seven assists to move past Erwin Claggett for 10th on the Billikens' career assists list with 348 helpers.

The Blazers won the battle on the glass, 38-27. They grabbed 15 offensive rebounds, which they turned into 17 second-chance points.

SLU shot 49 percent from the floor, 42.1 percent from the arc and 72.7 percent from the line. The Bills were sizzling in the first half, connecting on nearly 60 percent from the field, but that number went down to 36.4 percent in the second.

The Billikens jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a Terrence Hargrove Jr. trey, but UAB came right back with a 7-0 run.

SLU built its lead to 10 late in the first half, but a UAB 3-pointer sent the Bills into the lockerroom with a seven-point lead, 48-41.

UAB quickly trimmed its deficit in the second half and it was a one-possession game for much of the half until UAB went on a run go up by nine, 74-65, with four minutes to go.

But the resilient Billikens clawed back to within a basket thanks to free-throw shooting. Okoro, Collins and Thatch were clutch from the line and it was 74-72 UAB with a minute left.

UAB's Michael Ertel hit a long two from the left corner with 17 seconds left to put the Blazers up four, and they held on for the 77-72 win.
