THE BASICS
• Gabbie Kowalik homered twice and drove in four runs, and Aubrey Hacke tossed a shutout to lead Saint Louis to a 1-0, 6-5 doubleheader sweep of Western Illinois Friday on day one of the Billiken Spring Tournament.
• SLU improved to 3-7, while Western Illinois fell to 7-6.
 
GAME 1 – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Hacke set down the first nine WIU batters she faced.
• After Hacke worked out of a jam in the top of the fourth, Kowalik belted a two-out solo home run in the bottom half.
• WIU put the tying run on base in the seventh, but Hacke closed the door.
 
GAME 1 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
• Hacke struck out four while allowing only four hits and two walks.
• Sadie Wise doubled, and Maria Connell singled.
 
GAME 2 – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Western Illinois took a 2-0 lead in the second.
• In the Saint Louis third, Wise produced an RBI single before Kowalik slammed her third homer of the season, a three-run shot that gave the Billikens a 4-2 advantage.
• SLU added single tallies in the fourth and fifth on RBI singles by Kristi Stevenson and Kayla Swiderski.
• A three-run home run in the seventh narrowed the Saint Louis lead to 6-5, and Western Illinois had the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base. But Chloe Wendling came on to earn a save by recording the final out.
 
GAME 2 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
• Starting pitcher Kaiya Luneckas registered the victory.
• Kowalik added two singles for a three-hit outing.
• Alyssa Chavez doubled and singled.
• Kat Lane collected a single.
 
UP NEXT
The Billikens play twice in the Billiken Spring Tournament on Saturday, taking on Loyola Chicago at 1 p.m. and Western Illinois at 3 p.m.
