ST. LOUIS – Western Illinois broke open a close game with nine runs in the final two innings to post an 11-0 victory over Saint Louis Saturday at the Billiken Sports Center.
SLU falls to 3-11, while WIU improves to 3-8. The rubber match of the series is set for 1 p.m. tomorrow at the BSC.
WIU jumped on top 2-0 with runs in each of the first two innings. The next five frames were scoreless before the Leathernecks erupted for five runs in the eighth inning and four more in the ninth.
Mark Finkelnburg tossed 7.1 innings for Saint Louis and allowed three runs while scattering five hits. He struck out seven and walked none.
Among the Billikens' five hits was a triple by Jake Garella and a double by Sam Polk. SLU's best chance to score came in the bottom of the ninth when it had runners on second and third with one out, but the Billikens were unable to push a run across.
