Bills Win Overtime Thriller, Advance in NCAA Tourney

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis defeated Memphis 4-2 in overtime on Thursday night in a first-round matchup of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

The Billikens (12-4-3), who are unbeaten in their last nine matches, advance to face No. 13 national seed Indiana on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT) in Bloomington, Indiana. Memphis ends its season with a 9-6-4 mark.

The game went to overtime with the score tied at 2-2. Enzo Okpoye scored in the 95th minute off a long throw-in by Lane Warrington. The golden goal no longer applies in college soccer, so the teams played out the full 20 minutes of overtime. Late in the 108th minute, Jack Mika tacked on another goal for the 4-2 final.

Memphis opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Eric Primo scored off an assist by Gabriel Christensen. SLU tied the score in the 42nd minute when Mad Stistrup Petersen found Seth Anderson for an open netter. The teams went into halftime with the score tied 1-1.

Alberto Suarez made it 2-1 when he scored his sixth of the year on a penalty kick, which was awarded after John Klein was fouled in the box by the Memphis goalkeeper.

However, Memphis tied it back up at 2-2 when Bryce Meredith put one home after a scramble in the box. It went to overtime to set up the heroics by Okpoye and Mika.

Sunday's match between Saint Louis and Indiana pits two of the most storied soccer programs together. SLU has won an NCAA record 10 national titles and is making its 50th appearance in the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship. The Hoosiers own eight titles and are playing the NCAAs for the 47th time.
