Saint Louis leads 7-1-1 |
Saint Louis takes on the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers in an important Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer matchup Saturday afternoon in the Windy City. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
It's a rematch of last year's thrilling A-10 Championship game, where SLU took the title on PKs after a scoreless draw (read more). Weather may be a factor Saturday as the forecast in Chicago calls for rain and wind throughout the day.
The Billikens (7-3-2, 5-0-1) are unbeaten in their last eight, going 6-0-2 in that stretch. SLU has won four straight, including a 3-1 victory over Central Arkansas in nonconference play last week. The three goals scored by SLU were a season high.
Loyola Chicago is 6-2-3 overall and 2-1-2 in league play. The Ramblers are currently in a three-way tie for fifth in the conference standings. Every point (three for a win; one for a tie) is important as only the top seven teams advance to the A-10 Men's Soccer Championship.
Here are five additional facts in advance of Saturday's match at Loyola Chicago:
1 // Galen Flynn, Mason Hart and Diego Konincks were honored with weekly awards this week after helping Saint Louis to a pair of shutout victories for the period of Oct. 2-8. Flynn was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. Hart was tabbed the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week. Konincks picked up A-10 Defensive Player of the Week honors. 2 // On Tuesday against Central Arkansas, SLU scored a season-high three goals from three different players. Christian Buendia started the scoring with a goal that was featured on ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10 (see it here). CJ Coppola and Matthew Wrobel also scored for the Bills.
3 // The Billikens are back in the national rankings. They are ranked No. 25 in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll. SLU was up to No. 15 in the poll earlier this year. The Bills also checked in at No. 21 in this week's Top Drawer Soccer poll and were just outside of the College Soccer News top 30 poll.
4 // Saturday's game will be a homecoming of sorts for two Billikens who hail from the Chicago suburbs. Max Floriani is from Gurnee, Illinois, while Tomas Dovidaitis hails from Palatine, Illinois.
5 // This will be the 10th meeting between the two teams, a series that SLU leads 7-1-1. In addition to playing last year in the A-10 Championship game (SLU advanced on PKs), the teams played in the regular season with the Bills winning 2-1 at Hermann Stadium
