Billikens Fall to Undefeated BYU to Close Out Showcase

LAIE, Hawai'i – Saint Louis University fell here Tuesday evening, dropping a 87-66 contest to the undefeated BYU Cougars.

The loss drops the Billikens to 3-3 on the season, as SLU finished its three-game road trip to Hawaii with a win over Chaminade and losses to Power 5 opponents, Wake Forest and BYU.

The Billikens struggled from the floor in their second game in two days, shooting 31 percent, while the Cougars outscored SLU in the paint (26-10) and from the three-point line (33-12).

Brooklyn Gray won the opening tip-off for SLU and immediately found Peyton Kennedy under the net for the first points of the game. BYU responded, scoring four in the paint on an 8-0 run to take the early advantage. The Billikens pieced together a string of solid defensive possessions while connecting other side of the court to bring the game within five but two timely three pointers for the Cougars gave them a nine-point advantage at the end of the opening quarter.

At the start of the second quarter, both teams traded possessions while sitting in a three-minute scoring drought. Tierra Simon ended the slump with a tough layup bringing the score back within five, but BYU found an answer to take back the momentum. Simon again, was a spark for the Billikens, making back-to-back shots from behind the arc to bring SLU within six. The Billikens trailed 39-33 at the end of the first half.

Coming out of the locker rooms, the Billikens gave up five early points to go down by 11, while on the other side of the ball, their offensive woes continued.

Midway through the third quarter, SLU reduced its deficit to 10 points courtesy of a Kyla McMakin jumper, but from there, the Cougars continued on the offensive attack, going 6-11 from the three-point line in the second half to help ice the victory.

Kennedy recorded 16 points in the contest to lead the Billikens, while McMakin (12), Camree Clegg (11) and Simon (10) also reached double figures, the latter while pulling down 16 rebounds, good for her first double-double in a Billiken uniform.

SLU will be back in action Sunday when the Billikens host the University of Illinois Chicago in a matinee on Nov. 26. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
