Billikens Knock Off League-Leading UMass

ST. LOUIS — Saint Louis used a big second half to knock off first-place Massachusetts 77-75 in an Atlantic 10 Conference matchup Wednesday night at Chaifetz Arena.

Winners of seven of its last eight games, SLU moved to 13-17 on the season and 9-6 in conference play. UMass saw its 12-game winning streak snap, going to 23-5, 13-2.

Kyla McMakin led four Billikens in double figures with 19 points, along with three assists and two rebounds. She went 3-9 from behind the arc and 4-4 at the line. With 523 points on the year, McMakin sits in third place all-time in a single season by Billiken, first overall for a senior.

Peyton Kennedy knocked down all but one of her five 3-point attempts, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds. The Billikens made 10 of the 20 three-point shots.

Brooke Flowers notched a third straight double-double, the 39th of her career, with 12 points and 13 rebounds. She moved into 15th all-time on SLU's career scoring list with 1,217 points. With 271 rebounds on the season, Flowers has the sixth most boards in a single year by a Billiken.

Kennedy Calhoun was the fourth Billiken in double figures, finishing with 10 points, five rebounds and three steals.

The Billikens outrebounded UMass 45-35, marking just the seventh time this season the Minutewomen pulled down less boards than their opponent. Entering the contest, UMass held a +5.89 rebounding margin over its opponents.

Rookie Mia Nicastro tipped in an offensive rebound to beat the buzzer at the end of the first quarter and pulled the Billikens within seven points at 28-21. UMass shot 71 percent from the field in the frame, including 5-6 from deep.

SLU outrebounded the Minutewomen 23-13 in the first two quarters, but UMass posted a 44-36 edge at the break.

Camree Clegg knocked down treys on three consecutive possessions to spark an 11-0 run and a 51-48 lead for the Billikens with 2:15 left in the third quarter. SLU outscored UMass 20-6 in the frame to lead 56-50 at the end of three.

A Kyla McMakin triple gave SLU a six-point lead at 61-55 with 8:28 left in the game, but the Minutewomen answered with six straight points to knot up the contest. Kennedy followed the brief UMass run with a three-pointer to put the Billikens back ahead with a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

A Sam Been desperation three-pointer with less than a second left brought UMass within two points, but SLU came away with the 77-75 victory.

The Billikens wrap up the regular season Saturday afternoon at Loyola Chicago.
