Cape Girardeau, Mo. – Saint Louis'
Chloe Wendling tossed the second no-hitter of her career in game one and picked up the win in the circle in game two as Saint Louis swept St. Bonaventure 11-0 and 12-4 Saturday in Atlantic 10 Conference softball action.
Due to the cold weather in St. Louis, the games were played at the Southeast Softball Complex on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Sunday's series finale shifts back to St. Louis for a noon (CT) first pitch.
The Billikens improved to 8-16 overall and 2-0 in the A-10. St. Bonaventure fell to 2-12 and 0-2 in league play.
Wendling's no-hitter was the sixth in school history and the first since her perfect game in April of 2021. She joins Brianna Lore as the only Billikens with multiple no-hitters in SLU history. Wendling struck out eight batters in just five innings of work.
Jocelyn Abbott recorded five RBIs in game one, including a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth, part of an eight-run inning that put the game out of reach and allowed SLU to take it in five innings.
Abbott,
Chloe Rhine,
Natalie Sullivan,
Ashley Marietta and
Kelsey Etling all had two hits for the Bills in game one.
In game two, it was
Abby Mallo providing the offensive spark as she blasted a pair of home runs to account for her five RBIs. Sullivan and
Gabbie Kowalik added two hits apiece. Kowalik and
Cami Newbanks each drove in two runs.
With the score tied 4-4, Wendling pitched a scoreless top of the fifth to set up a big bottom-half of the inning. The Billikens would go on to score eight in their half of the fifth to not only break the tie, but to clinch the win via the run rule.
The win in game two was No. 300 at Saint Louis for head coach
Christy Connoyer, who has been at the helm of the Billikens since 2011.
SLU will go for the series sweep tomorrow at noon at the Billiken Sports Center.
