Billikens Drop Tough-Luck Extra Inning Battle 4-3

 
San José, Calif. – Owen Chaffin was one out away from a complete-game shutout, but San José State came back and won in extras, defeating Saint Louis 4-3 in 11 innings at Excite Ballpark today.
 
Chaffin struck out six and went eight and two thirds of an inning for the Billikens (12-9). Luke Gasser and Colby Downard threw in relief.
 
Cameron Swanger paced the offense for the Billikens as he had a three-run homer, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Cole Smith scored a run and added a hit, while Knox Preston had a run and a pair of walks.  
 
SJSU (10-9) got two hits each from three different players.  
 
Saint Louis got its only runs on a three-run bomb from Swanger scoring Smith and Preston to give the Billikens a 3-0 lead in the fourth.
 
The Spartans tied it up in the ninth as Collette had a two-run double to the wall in right center and Cadena singled to right to score Collette and tie the game in the ninth and force extra innings.
 
Neither team scored in the tenth but for the second-straight game, San José State walked it off in extra innings on an RBI single from Hunter Dorraugh.
 
The Bills will have a mid-week game on Tuesday at home against Southern Illinois – Edwardsville at 5 pm, before opening up A10 play with a three-game set against UMASS from the Billiken Sports Center next weekend.
