Richmond, Va. – A four-run seventh and three-run eighth set the tone and the Billikens fell 10-6 in the series opener to Virginia Commonwealth at The Diamond.
The Billikens (24-15, 9-4 A10) picked up home runs from
Patrick Clohisy and
Cam Redding with Clohisy driving in two and scored a run, while Redding had an RBI and a run scored.
Hayden Moore had a double, two RBIs and a run scored, while
Ethan Sitzman drove in a run.
Tyler Fogarty,
Knox Preston and
Austin Neuweg had a hit each.
Henry Litman started and went five innings, striking out eight and allowing just two earned runs.
VCU (21-21, 7-6 A10) had three hits each from Brandon Eike and Will Carlone, while Eike drove in three.
The Billikens jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Clohisy started the scoring with a homer to right center in the first, while Moore doubled home Preston and Fogarty in the second to start a four-run inning.
Sitzman drove home Neuweg with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0, while Clohisy added a sacrifice of his own to score Moore to end the scoring.
The Rams scored a run in the third and two in the fifth, but seven over the seventh and eighth innings sealed the win.
Redding now has 148 RBIs in his career at SLU and is just five from moving into fourth place on the all-time list.
Rain was an issue today and the two teams will look to beat the weather as a double-header will now be played tomorrow starting at noon to finish out the series.
