THE BASICS
Saint Louis jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held off a late Dayton rally to post a 6-4 victory Friday afternoon in the opener of a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series.
 
With the win, the Billikens (15-19, 7-2 A-10) jumped over the Flyers into first place in the conference standings.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
•Gabbie Kowalik's first-inning RBI single put Saint Louis on top 1-0.
•The Bills made it 2-0 in the second on a throwing error.
•It was 3-0 SLU following Jane Kaniecki's third-inning RBI single.
•Kowalik clubbed her fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the fourth to increase the lead to 5-0.
•Dayton tallied single runs in the fourth and fifth.
•The Billikens added an insurance marker in the seventh on Kelsey Etling's RBI squeeze-bunt single.
•Dayton scored twice in the seventh and had the tying runs aboard, but SLU hurler Chloe Wendling worked out of the jam to nail down the victory.
 
BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Wendling allowed just two earned runs.
•Ashley Marietta doubled.
•Chloe Rhine and Cami Newbanks had a single apiece.
