Davidson, NC – In a battle of two of the top offenses in the A-10, Saint Louis scored 22 runs today at Davidson, but the Billikens dropped both ends of a double-header falling 12-11 in game one and 14-11 in game two.
Game One
It was a tale of big innings for both teams as Davidson had innings with five and six runs scored and the Billikens scored eight in the sixth, but it was a six-run ninth for the Wildcats that completed the comeback.
Cameron Swanger singled home
Cam Redding to put the Billikens (27-20, 12-9 A-10) up 1-0 in the fourth, but Davidson answered with a run to tie it in the bottom half of the inning and five in the fifth to go up 6-1 after five.
The Billikens put up eight runs in the sixth to go up 9-6.
Tyler Fogarty started the scoring with a two-run homer and
Hayden Moore scored Swanger to make the score 6-4.
Patrick Clohisy hit a sacrifice fly to score
Cody Jansen and Redding singled home both
Ethan Sitzman and
Austin Neuweg to go on top 7-6.
Cole Smith added a two-run homer to end the scoring in the sixth. Moore added a run for the Bills in the seventh on a sacrifice fly and Redding homered in the eighth to make the score 11-6 heading to the ninth.
The Wildcats (29-19, 15-5 A-10) plated six runs in the bottom of the ninth to take the game.
SLU had homers from Redding, Smith and Fogarty as Smith added a double and drove in a pair and scored twice. Moore, Redding and Fogarty drove in two each, while Redding scored three. Swanger went 4-for-4 on the day.
Game Two
Davidson scored two in the first, but the Billikens answered with a run in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth.
Knox Preston singled home Fogarty to get the Bills on the board in the second and Sitzman had a sacrifice fly to score Moore to tie the game in the third. Smith then singled home Clohisy to give the Billikens a 3-2 lead after three.
SLU added three more in the fourth starting with a two-run homer for Preston, scoring
Easton Richter. Clohisy drove home Neuweg with a sacrifice fly to make the score 6-2.
Davidson added three in the bottom half of the inning and four more in the fifth and three in the seventh to lead 12-6 after seven innings.
SLU added five in the eighth to get within a run (12-11). Neuweg doubled home Preston, before
Colin Bergmann singled home Preston. Clohisy singled home Bergmann before Redding unleashed a three-run bomb, his second home run of the double-header.
The Wildcats added two more in the eighth to finish the scoring.
Redding and Preston drove in three and had a home run each, while Neuweg had three hits and Clohisy and Preston scored two runs each.
Jackson Holmes started and went four innings, while
Jack Dumont,
Caleb Thomson and
Evan Gray threw in relief.
The Billikens will have a mid-week game at home on Tuesday against Lindenwood, before finishing the regular season with three games next weekend against Fordham inside the Billiken Sports Center.
