RICHMOND, Va. – Saint Louis pushed a season-high 23 runs across the plate in a 23-8 victory over top-seeded Saint Joseph's on Wednesday on the second day of the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Championship at The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia.
Saint Louis (32-21) will have an off day on Thursday and will play Friday at 10 a.m. (CT) for a spot in the championship round against either No. 2 Davidson or No. 6 George Mason.
The 23 runs are the second-most in A-10 Baseball Championship history, behind the 25 runs scored by Rutgers in 1981. It is the first time since 1999 (Virginia Tech 20, La Salle 6) that a team scored 20 or more runs in the A-10 Baseball Championship.
Every Billiken in the starting lineup scored at least once and recorded a hit. Tyler Fogarty had a career day at the plate, reaching base six times and going 5-for-5 with a school-record six runs scored. Cam Redding continued his hot play with a 3-for-6, five-RBI afternoon for the Billikens. He had a two-run homer in the fifth and cleared the bases with a bases-loaded double in the eighth.
Austin Neuweg was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the ninth. Cole Smith had a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
Hayden Moore (3-for-5) and Ethan Sitzman drove in three runs apiece. Knox Preston had a hit and scored three times.
Saint Joseph's (27-23-1) led 7-6 after three innings, but the Billiken bats exploded to score 17 straight. SLU broke the game open with eight runs in the top of the eighth.Â
SLU starter Henry Litman (6-3) went five innings in picking up the win. Colby Downard was effective in three innings of relief, while Ethan Gray came on to pitch the ninth. For the second straight game, the pitching staff did its job so as to not overextend the bullpen.
Davidson and George Mason are playing Wednesday to join SLU in the winner's bracket game on Friday. All games of the A-10 Baseball Championship will be streamed on ESPN+.
