Billikens Top Mason, Advance to A-10 Championship Round

Richmond, Va. – Fourth-seeded Saint Louis topped No. 6 George Mason 6-5 on Friday in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Championship at The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia.

SLU (33-21) now advances to Saturday's championship round. The Billikens will face either No. 6 George Mason or No. 3 Dayton Saturday at 11 a.m. (CT). If the Billikens win, they would capture their fifth A-10 title and qualify for the NCAA Baseball Championship. A loss in the first game on Saturday would produce a winner-take-all matchup against the same teams on Saturday afternoon.

On Friday, the Billikens received 4.1 innings of relief from Jack Weber, who picked up the win on the hill. He allowed just one run on five hits. Ethan Bell came on with two outs in the ninth and runners on second and third to retire the final hitter of the game to earn his fourth save.

Hayden Moore had three hits and an RBI, while Cole Smith extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a pair of hits. Cam Redding, Cameron Swanger, Knox Preston and Austin Neuweg also provided the RBIs for SLU.

The Billikens struck first with a run in the bottom of the first. Moore reached on a leadoff single, and ended up on third after a walk and a stolen base. He trotted home on a long sacrifice fly off the bat of Redding to make it 1-0 SLU.

SLU added three in the fourth thanks in part to another leadoff hit. Smith singled to start the rally, then came around to score on a Preston base hit. Then, Austin Neuweg singled home Preston. Moore belted a double to left to plate Neuweg, making it a 4-0 Billikens lead after four.

George Mason put up five runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead, despite registering only two hits in the inning. The Patriots took advantage of three players hit by a pitch and two walks to snag their first lead of the contest.

SLU pushed across a pair of runs in the seventh to go on top 6-5, again getting the leadoff man on base. Redding scored an unearned run, then Swanger lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Smith for the go-ahead run.

Weber stymied the Patriots over his 4.1 innings of work, with an assist from Bell who came on in the middle of an at-bat to get the final out.
