MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – Saint Louis twice rallied from a one-goal deficit and scored with less than five minutes remaining in regulation time to send the game to OT, but Bryant prevailed in a shootout to win 3-2 over the Bills Sunday in Saint Louis' home opener at SportPort International.
The Billikens fall to 0-2 on the young season. Bryant completes its season-opening roadtrip to St. Louis with a 2-0 record after the Bulldogs also defeated Lindenwood yesterday at SportPort.
The resilient Billikens twice answered Bryant's tallies during the match. The Bulldogs' Zoe Bates got the scoring started in the 19th minute, but SLU responded quickly when Josefina Perez notched her first goal of the season off of a Shaya Dry pass in the 21st minute.
The score remained 1-1 until the fourth quarter. Bryant took the lead 2-1 in the 49th minute after Brittany Gouws converted a penalty stroke.
SLU was awarded a penalty stroke of its own in the 56th minute, and Demi Sahuleka calmly buried the chance to tie the match at 2-2.
The teams played 20 minutes of overtime with no goals scored, so the match was decided in a shootout. The Bulldogs edged the Bills 3-2 in the shootout to capture the win.
Kendyl Underwood was impressive in the cage for SLU, making nine saves.
The Billikens are in the midst of a five-game homestand and host Towson to SportPort on Friday, Sept. 1. Game time is set for noon.
