KANSAS CITY – The Billikens dropped a hard-fought match to Austin Peay Friday morning, falling to the Governors in four sets to open the KC Roos Klassic.
The loss moves the Billikens to 6-4 on the year while Austin Peay (7-3) earns the tournament's first win.
The Governors came out firing, and jumped out to a 8-3 lead early in the first set. The Billikens wouldn't be put down easy, though, battling their way back to a 25-18 final score in set one.
The Billikens took control in set two, recording 18 kills on .233 hitting to even the match, 1-1.
From there, the back-and-forth affair continued, as runs defined set three, which ended, 25-21, in favor of the Governors.
Set four was more of the same, marked by six ties and two lead changes before Austin Peay secured the 26-24 final set and match.
Emily Henken and
Delaney Rice combined for 24 of the team's 52 kills, while
Trinity Luckett and
Delaney Rice added nine apiece.
Kate Aupperle and
Carlie Rodgers each tallied 19 digs while
Vivian Kieffer recorded a career-high 23 assists.
The Billikens will be back in action at 4 p.m. against SEMO.
