Billikens Suffer Setback at George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – Saint Louis University women's basketball dropped its sixth road game of the season here Wednesday night as the Billikens fell, 91-61, to George Mason.

The loss drops the Billikens to 7-12 on the year and 2-4 in Atlantic 10 Conference play.

George Mason, coming into the matchup undefeated on its home court, flexed its dominance early, jumping out to a 10-0 lead at EagleBank Arena. Peyton Kennedy scored the Billikens' first points of the night four minutes in, but the Patriots hit the first of their six made three-pointers of the night to further extend their lead. At the end of the first quarter, nine turnovers plagued the Billikens, helping the home team take the early 23-11 lead.

Mia Nicastro pulled down a rebound to begin the second period, helping set up Tierra Simon for back-to-back scores in the paint. The momentum shift was short-lived, though, as seven made free throws helped extend George Mason's lead to 16 points (36-20). Scores from Bri Johns and Simon helped the Billikens pull within three, but the Patriots answered with another layup.

Despite the Billikens limiting their turnovers to two in the second quarter, 53 percent shooting in the first half and 26 points in the paint from the Patriots sent them into the locker room leading, 47-32.

The Patriots kept their foot on the gas out of the break extending their lead to 20. Despite the Billikens shooting a night-best 44 percent in the ensuing quarter, George Mason shot 61 percent. Seven additional Billiken turnovers turned into nine points for the home team, increasing SLU's deficit to 25 points with 10 minutes left to play.

SLU continued to fight through the final minutes, as five Billikens scored and eight pulled down at least one rebound. Mason's offensive prowess was too much to overcome, though, as the Billikens gave up over 90 points for only the second time this season and first time since Nov. 20, against Wake Forest.

Kennedy led all Billikens with 13 points, while Simon added a high of 12 during her time at Saint Louis while pulling down five rebounds. Julia Martinez led the team with seven boards and Mia Nicastro added five, but the Billikens lost the battle on the glass getting out-rebounded, 37-33.

The Billikens will be back in action at George Washington Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT).
