ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis battled the No. 5 team in the nation for 70 minutes in a 1-0 loss to Saint Joseph's Friday in Atlantic 10 Conference field hockey action at the SLU Field Hockey Complex.
The Bills move to 1-11 overall and 0-6 in league play. Saint Joseph's improves to 14-2 and 5-1 in the A-10.
SLU freshman goalie Abby Schalow posted a career-high 12 saves to keep the Billikens in the match.
Saint Joseph's scored the only goal of the game in the second quarter when the A-10 leading scorer, Lily Santi, snuck in her 14th goal of the season.
The Billikens had a chance to equalize in the fourth quarter as Shaya Dry generated a great chance, but her shot was stopped by SJU goalie Marith Bijkerk.
SLU returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Maryville at the SLU FH Complex. Game time is 1 p.m.
