ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis head coach Josh Schertz won his first game as the Billikens' head coach in a 95-44 victory over Avila University Sunday at Chaifetz Arena.
The Billikens (1-1) were led by Gibson Jimerson's 28 points. He was 9-of-17 from the field and 6-of-11 from the arc.
Kellen Thames went for 16 points and a team-high tying eight rebounds. He also registered a career-high four steals.
Larry Hughes II drilled five 3-pointers for 15 points. Amari McCottry went for five points, four rebounds, a team-high six assists and four steals.
The Billikens shot a school-record 41 3-pointers, bettering the previous mark of 39 against Wake Forest in the 1995 NCAA Tournament. SLU did not allow a 3-pointer for the first time in a game since Jan. 1, 2011, against Bowling Green.
Avila hung around early on and trailed by one at 19-18 midway through the first half. But SLU responded with a 16-0 run to build a double-digit lead and the Bills cruised from there.
Saint Louis was without Kobe Johnson and Robbie Avila due to injury. All other scholarship players played 9-plus minutes.
The Billikens are back in action next Saturday when they take on Loyola Marymount at Chaifetz Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
