ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis maintained its grip on an Atlantic 10 Conference postseason berth with a 3-1 victory over George Mason Saturday afternoon at Chaifetz Pavilion.
With two matches remaining, the Billikens are alone in sixth place in the league standings. The top six teams qualify for the A-10 Championship.
Addy Brus,
Trinity Luckett and
Kayla Jansen led SLU's attack Saturday. Brus collected a match-high 19 kills, Luckett recorded 11 kills and hit a match-high .524 (11-0-21), and Jansen notched eight kills while hitting .462 (8-2-13).
Abby Lynn (match-high 26 assists) and
Addie Lyon (17 assists) helped the Bills post a .270 team hitting mark.
Carlie Rodgers registered a match-high 21 digs, and Lynn completed a double-double with 12 digs. Jansen turned in match highs of four blocks and three service aces, while Luckett and
Delaney Rice contributed three blocks apiece.
Saint Louis def. George Mason 19-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-18
Set 1 – When George Mason scored to create the fourth tie of the set at 6-6, it sparked an 11-3 run that put the Patriots in command with a 16-9 cushion. SLU narrowed the gap to 22-19 before Mason tallied the final three points.
Set 2 – Saint Louis took the lead for good at 2-1 and gradually built a five-point advantage. After Mason made it 14-13 with a 4-0 run, SLU answered with its own 4-0 spurt to re-establish a five-point lead. The margin swung between three and five points the rest of the way before the Bills evened the match.
Set 3 – The pivotal third set featured 13 ties and five lead changes, and neither team owned more than a three-point upper hand. Mason pulled even after trailing 23-21 and 24-23, but kills by Rice and Brus secured a SLU victory.
Set 4 – Another tight frame included 10 ties and five lead swaps. The final deadlock was 16-all, after which the Billikens caught fire with a 9-2 flurry that concluded the set and the match.
Saint Louis concludes the regular season at home Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16, vs. league leader and nationally ranked Dayton. Match times at Chaifetz Pavilion are 6 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday. The Billiken seniors will be honored at Saturday's match.
