ST. LOUIS –
Isaiah Swope led three Saint Louis players in double figures with 19 points and
Kalu Anya narrowly missed a double-double, but Wofford held on for a 74-71 victory over the Billikens Wednesday night at Chaifetz Arena.
Robbie Avila scored 16 points and added six rebounds and a game-high and career-high-tying eight assists, while
Kobe Johnson tossed in a season-high 12 points. Anya finished with nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
In a first half that featured seven lead changes, Saint Louis used a 17-7 run to turn a 21-18 deficit into a 35-28 advantage, its largest lead of the game, at intermission.
Wofford, a member of the Southern Conference, outscored SLU 19-6 in the first six minutes of the second half to go in front 47-41. An 8-2 run, including 3-pointers from Johnson and
Dylan Warlick, pulled the Billikens even at 49 with 10:39 remaining.
Wofford went back on top for good, 51-49, on its next possession following Warlick's game-tying trey. The Terriers led 71-65 at the 1:07 mark after Corey Tripp, who finished with a game-high 24 points, drove for a layup.
Swope scored the Billikens' next six points to close the gap to one, 72-71, with 5 seconds left. After Tripp sank two free throws to make it a three-point margin, Saint Louis successfully executed a long inbounds pass, but a 3-point attempt to tie was deflected.
The Billikens play at Grand Canyon Sunday, Dec. 22. Tip time is 3 p.m. Central.
