MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Behind an eighth-inning grand slam, Saint Louis University baseball remained undefeated here Sunday, defeating Western Illinois, 8-5.
Â
The Billikens earned the win in come-from-behind fashion, moving to 7-0 on the season, matching their best start to a season since 2002.Â
Â
Despite
Ben Gallaher driving in
Drew Winters to take the 1-0 lead in the top of the third, SLU saw itself trailing 3-1 by the end of the inning. WIU tacked on an additional two runs in the ensuing innings, to extend its lead to four runs.
Â
In the top of the sixth, the Billikens plated two runs, but still found themselves in a two-run deficit. Winters turned the tides for SLU, blasting his second grand slam of the weekend to give the Billikens a 7-5 lead. Early in the ninth,
Cole Smith tacked on an insurance run for SLU, driving in
Hayden Moore to extend the team's lead to 8-5. The Billikens defense stepped up in the final inning, securing the third and final out of the game with three Leathernecks on base.
Â
Jackson Yarberry earned his second win of the season on the mound, facing 19 batters. In 4.2 innings, the freshman pitcher only allowed three hits and one run, while striking out two batters.Â
Â
The Billikens will be back in action Tuesday afternoon in a midweek contest against SIUE. First pitch in Edwardsville, Ill., is set for 3 p.m.
