GAME RESULTS
Game 1 – Saint Louis 11, Indiana State 2 (6 innings)
Game 2 – Saint Louis 4, Austin Peay 2
Friday, March 1, 2024
Clarksville, Tenn.

THE BASICS
Saint Louis slugged its way to one victory Friday and took advantage of an opponent's miscue to earn another on day one of Austin Peay's Governors Classic.

A seven-run second inning powered the Billikens to an 11-2 win over Indiana State. SLU scored all its runs in the fifth inning to defeat Austin Peay 4-2.

GAME 1 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•Indiana State loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the first inning, but SLU starter Taylor Hochman limited the Sycamores to two runs.
•Chloe Rhine sparked the Bills' second-inning uprising with a leadoff solo shot, her second home run of the season. Abby Ulsas tied it with an RBI infield single, Natalie Sullivan drove in a run while reaching on an error, Allie Marietta drew a bases-loaded walk, Kelsey Etling plated a run with a fielder's choice, and Rhine made it a three-RBI inning by smacking a two-run double.
•Cami Newbanks' RBI single in the third expanded the lead to 8-2.
•The Billikens ended the game with three tallies in the sixth. Pinch runner Sophia Boente scored on a wild pitch, and Etling walked it off with her third homer of the year, a two-run blast.

GAME 1 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Hochman upped her record to 5-1. She struck out four and allowed just one earned run, five hits and one walk.
•Ulsas added a single for a two-hit game.
•Marietta doubled and Jocelyn Abbott singled.

GAME 2 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•Austin Peay scored single runs in the second and third innings, but Billiken starter Isabel Royle kept things under control by working out of a bases-loaded jam in the second.
•It stayed 2-0 until the top of the fifth, when a one-out error cost Austin Peay dearly. Abbott cut the Governors' lead in half with an RBI single, and Newbanks delivered a two-out, three-run homer to put the Billikens on top 4-2. All four runs were unearned.
•Austin Peay brought the tying run to the plate in the fifth and seventh innings, and the go-ahead run was at bat in the sixth, but Royle kept the Governors off the scoreboard.

GAME 2 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Saint Louis turned three double plays.
•Royle moved to 2-1. She struck out nine and scattered six hits.
•Newbanks' home run, her third of the season, lifted her team-leading RBI total to 16.
•Abbott collected a second single for a two-hit game.
•Rhine, Sullivan and Abby Mallo picked up a single apiece.
