THE BASICS
Cami Newbanks and Abby Mallo homered to power Saint Louis to a 7-2 victory over Saint Joseph's in game two of an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Billiken Sports Center.
 
Saint Joseph's won the opener 5-4.
 
SLU is 15-11 overall and 3-2 in the A-10.
 
GAME 1 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•Saint Joseph's took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the third inning.
•Saint Louis answered in the bottom of the inning. Kendall Johnson scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, Newbanks smacked an RBI double, and Mallo's RBI single made it 3-1.
•Chloe Rhine led off the sixth with her third home run of the season to increase SLU's lead to 4-1.
•Saint Joseph's erupted for four runs in the seventh and worked around a pair of walks in the bottom half to claim the win.
 
GAME 1 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Rhine added a single for a two-hit game.
•Johnson, Natalie Sullivan and Jane Kaniecki had a single apiece.
 
GAME 2 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•Newbanks clubbed her team-high seventh homer of the year, a two-run shot, to give the Billikens a 2-0 first-inning lead.
•Saint Louis exploded for five tallies in the third, all scoring with two outs. Mallo launched a three-run home run, her sixth long ball of the season, and Abby Ulsas delivered a two-run single to swell the advantage to 7-0.
•The Hawks plated two unearned runs in the seventh.
 
GAME 2 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Isabel Royle went the distance in the circle and improved to 5-1. Royle struck out six, scattered eight hits and walked three.
•Ulsas, Rhine and Johnson had two singles apiece.
•Sullivan, Kaniecki and Jocelyn Abbott each collected a single.
 
UP NEXT
The Billikens and Hawks conclude their three-game series Sunday at noon.
