ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis University baseball added two more wins to its resume here Saturday, as the Billikens took both games of their double-header with LMU, defeating the Lions 9-5 in game one and 8-6 in game two.
The Billikens record moves to 13-1 on the season continuing one of their best starts in program history. SLU's 17 runs through Saturday's games boost the team's run total to 164 and 11.7 per game. The Billikens have outscored their opponents by an average of 7.0 runs per contest.
LMU got on the board first in game one of two at the Billiken Sports Center, before Patrick Clohisy's fourth home run of the season plated four runs for the Billikens. With the advantage heading into the fourth inning, the home team did not trail again as two additional RBIs from Cole Smith helped the Billikens to a four-run win.
Tommy Ray earned his first win in a Billiken uniform, striking out seven batters through six complete innings while Jack Weber got the save pitching three and striking out three.
In the second game against the Lions, the Billikens allowed their opponent to strike first once again, before Clohisy's double to right field drove Ethan Sitzman home before the junior plated a run of his own off an RBI by Tyler Fogarty. A sacrifice fly from Drew Winters in the third inning put the Billikens on top, but the Lions answered the call, tying the game at three apiece in the top of the second.
Sitzman helped SLU take and extend its lead for good in the ensuing innings, and despite three additional Lions scores, the Billikens' defense held up, defeating LMU by two runs.
Jackson Holmes earned the Billikens' second win of the day on the mound pitching five complete innings and striking out five batters. In relief, Ethan Bell recorded his second save of the season only allowing one hit through the game's two critical final innings.
The Billikens will look to sweep the Lions in the final game of the series Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for noon at the Billiken Sports Center.
