THE BASICS
Kendall Johnson drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give Saint Louis a 2-1 victory over Rhode Island and a split of an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Billiken Sports Center.

Rhode Island won the opener 2-0.

Second-place Saint Louis (22-14, 10-4) remained one game behind league leader Saint Joseph's, which split its doubleheader at George Washington, and one game ahead of Dayton and Fordham, who split a twinbill in the Bronx.

GAME 1 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•Rhode Island scored single runs in the third and fourth innings.
•SLU had the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base in the fifth and sixth but could not push across any runs.

Taylor Hochman took the tough-luck loss in the circle. Hochman scattered seven hits, struck out three and walked two.

Kelsey Etling doubled.

GAME 2 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•Rhode Island grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fifth.
•Kaniecki led off the seventh with a single, and pinch-runner
Karsen Jany went all the way to third on Mallo's sacrifice bunt. Rhine followed with a game-tying RBI single, and Etling's single put runners at first and second. After
Jocelyn Abbott's ground ball to the circle went in and out of the pitcher's glove for an error to load the bases, Johnson sent a pop fly into shallow left field that the URI left fielder could not come up with, and Rhine crossed with the winning run.

GAME 2 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Saint Louis has won its last four one-run games.
•Kaniecki added a single for a two-hit game.
•Johnson collected a single.
•
Isabel Royle improved to 8-3. Royle struck out three, surrendered seven hits and walked only one.
