Late Rally Falls Short as Billikens Suffer Loss to Spiders

TYSONS, Va. - Saint Louis University baseball dropped its first game of the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Championship here Wednesday afternoon, falling 13-10 to four-seeded Richmond.

Despite the Billikens out-hitting their foe, 13-11, the Spiders hit five home runs while Saint Louis stranded eight runners on base.

Top-seeded Saint Louis found themselves in an early hole in game four of the tournament, as the Spiders rode their momentum from their eight-run win over George Washington the day previous, and blasted a three-run home run to take the lead in the top of the first. Richmond tacked on an additional three runs in the third, while the Billikens struggled to heat up their bats.

Easton Richter got things going offensively for SLU in the bottom of the fourth, hitting his first of two home runs to get the Billikens on the board and pull the score back within four (6-2).

The Spiders answered, hitting two additional home runs in the fifth and sixth innings to stop SLU's momentum short.

Saint Louis drove in three runs in the sixth to lessen the deficit, but Richmond once again found an answer to extend their lead back to 13-5.

The Billikens, sparked by second home runs from Richter and Tyler Fogarty, pulled within three to end the eighth, but could not complete their comeback, going down in order to end the game in the bottom of the ninth.

In the double-elimination tournament, the Billikens will play the winner of Wednesday's 7 p.m. game, UMass or Saint Joseph's. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. (CST).
