RICHMOND, Va. – Saint Louis got second-quarter goals from Shaya Dry and Abby Vidas in a 2-1, come-from-behind victory over the Richmond Spiders Friday at Crenshaw Field in Virginia.
The Billikens won their second in a row and improved to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in Atlantic 10 play. Richmond fell to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the league.
It marked the first-ever win for the Bills in 24 games against Richmond in a series that dates to 1993. Also, it was SLU's first A-10 road victory since 2007.
In addition to the goals by Dry and Vidas, the Billikens were led by SLU keeper Abby Schalow. She finished with five saves, including a stop on a penalty stroke when the Spiders were leading 1-0.
Richmond snuck ahead first with a goal by Clara Larripa in the first quarter off a penalty corner. Several minutes later, the Spiders were awarded a penalty stroke, and Schalow saved the day diving to her right for the stop. It was the second save for Schalow this year on a penalty stroke.
The momentum generated after that save carried into the second quarter, and the Bills capitalized. Dry scored the equalizing goal off a rebound from a shot by Hazel Merry. The Spiders were unable to clear the ball and Dry poked it over the line on the doorstep.
Later, Sierra Larson carried the ball into the circle and centered it for Vidas, who deflected it into the back of the cage for the eventual game-winning goal.
The Billikens are back in action on Sunday when they host UC Davis. Game time at the SLU FH Complex is noon.
