Billikens Fall in Five Set Heartbreaker to VCU

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis University volleyball fell in a five set thriller to VCU. The loss is the Billikens first at home all season, they drop to 0-3 in conference play while the Rams improve to 3-1.

Set 1: VCU took control of the momentum early in the match, getting out to an 8-2 lead, a lead it never lost control of in the first set. After a Billikens timeout, SLU proceeded to go on a quick 4-0 run, which cut VCU's lead to three, but still, the scoring continued for the Rams. VCU led by as many as six points taking firm control of set one, giving them a 25-19 win.

Set 2: The early goings of set two saw both SLU and VCU trading points. The score was tied six times before either team scored double-digit points. The set continued to be a back-and-forth affair with both teams tied 17-17 midway through the second set. The Billikens were the first to score 20, and a late 3-0 run to clinch the set paved the way to their 27-25 win to even up the match to one set apiece.

Set 3: SLU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to start the third set. The Billikens cruised past the Rams for the majority of the set, taking charge with a six-point lead. VCU made a push of its own with an impulsive 3-0 run to cut SLU's lead to 16-13. Another late 3-0 run by the Rams put them on the verge of a comeback, but SLU was able to close things out and win set three, 25-20.

Set 4: A 5-5 tie set the stage for another competitive set between the Billikens and the Rams. Both teams continued their scoring attack, tying the game at 10-10 moments later. The Rams offense then compiled a 9-0 scoring run to take a commanding 17-10 lead halfway through the set. SLU responded with a 6-2 run, bridging the gap to 19-16. The Rams closed out the set with a 25-17 win.

Set 5: The Rams got out to a 10-3 lead in the final set and while the Billikens fought back to make it a three-point game, VCU ended the match with a 15-10 win.
